This week Police will be patrolling hotspot locations during ‘The National Seatbelt Campaign’ to ensure people are driving safely and wearing their seatbelts.

Why is wearing a seatbelt so important?

Seatbelts aren’t there to ruin your fun or make your journey more uncomfortable. They help to keep you safe and could save your life. Did you know?

· In a crash you’re twice as likely to die if you don’t wear a seat belt.

· Drivers and passengers aged 17-34 have the lowest seat belt wearing rates, combined with the highest accident rate.

· People are less likely to use seat belts on short or familiar journeys – putting them at serious risk of injury in a crash.

· Drivers and passengers who fail to wear seat belts in the front and back of vehicles are breaking the law.

· Drivers caught without a seat belt face on the spot fines of £100. If prosecuted, the maximum fine is £500.

How can you help?

You might already be someone who always wears their seatbelt, but do you know of friends or family members who sometimes don’t wear theirs?

Perhaps you have children who have recently passed their driving test, data shows people in this age group are the most likely to not wear their seatbelt.

Please remind them of the dangers of not wearing one and even if you are only going on a short journey, it could be the one time your seatbelt saves your life.
