We would like to seek your views on the location of a new play area for north of Canterbury Road in Westgate-on-Sea. This area of the town currently has no public play facilities. Westgate-on-Sea Town Council has been awarded £40,000 from Thanet District Council, which, together with £20,000 from the Council’s own budget, will allow us to provide a new inclusive play area for residents and visitors to the town.

Further consultations will follow asking for feedback on potential build materials and design ideas once a suitable site has been identified.

In alphabetical order, the three possible sites marked on the map are:

  1. Adrian Square (Dark orange)
  2. Ethelbert Square (Yellow)
  3. Sea Road (Light orange)

1.Adrian Square

This site is in the centre of the town, just off Station Road to the south and Westgate Bay Avenue to the north. The walled central garden is surrounded by residential properties and accessed via small openings in the wall. There is limited parking around Adrian Square and modifications to gates and walls may have to be made for accessibility. A play area is likely to take up around half of the Square’s open space. There are overhanging trees. There are public toilets and refreshment facilities available in the town centre.

2. Ethelbert Square

This site is also in the centre of the town, just off Station Road to the south and Westgate Bay Avenue to the north. Smaller than Adrian Square, the walled central garden is surrounded by residential properties and accessed via small openings in the wall. There is limited parking around Ethelbert Square and modifications may have to be made for accessibility. A play area is likely to take up more than half of the Square’s open space. There are overhanging trees. There are public toilets and refreshment facilities available in the town centre.

3. Sea Road

This site is on the large grassy area above the beach to the east side of West Bay, close to West Bay Café. There are residential properties to the south side of Sea Road, which is a wide road with free parking. There may be the opportunity to install speed bumps to the road in the future. The site is partially protected by established hedging. There are public toilets and refreshment facilities at West Bay Café.
