Council invites local people to share feedback on 2026/27 draft budget

Thanet District Council is inviting local people to give feedback on the council’s draft budget for the next financial year (April 2026 to March 2027).

Local councils receive income from Council Tax and business rates as well as from fees and charges for certain services provided. There is also some funding from central government.

Each year the council must set a balanced budget. It must decide how much to spend on delivering services for Thanet’s residents and businesses. It includes recommendations about financing those services and spending on new proposals.

This year, it proposes an additional £1.2m of investment in key areas. This is to address ongoing increased demand in areas where the council has a statutory duty to provide the service.

In October 2025, 7,000 local households were invited to share what matters most to them, in the council’s annual Residents' Survey. The budget proposal considers some of the feedback received.

This new budget survey is an opportunity for local people to review and share their views on investment and one-off spending proposals.

Feedback can be given via an online survey here https://yourvoice.thanet.gov.uk/en-GB/projects/budget-survey-2026-27 The online survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

Anyone unable to complete the online survey can request the questions in an alternative format from the council’s Customer Services team on 01843 577000.

The survey will close at 5pm on Monday 16 February.

The budget proposal will be considered at Full Council on Thursday 26 February.

If approved, the budget will be in place between Wednesday 1 April 2026 and Wednesday 31 March 2027.

The Cabinet report, outlining the proposed budget and areas for additional investment, is available here https://democracy.thanet.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=151&MId=6998
