Have you spotted them? They’re mainly there for people living in the flats above the shops, so residents can get rid of food waste at any time of the day or night – especially useful in warmer weather, when it can quickly start to smell.

You can put in:
Meat and fish, dairy, bread, rice and pasta, tea bags and coffee grounds, eggshells and pet food.

Please don’t put in:
Pet poo or cat litter, plastic bags or cling film, liquids or oils, or food packaging.

Before the new food waste collections began, around 27% of the rubbish in general black bins was actually food. Separating it out means fewer smelly bin bags, fewer flies, wasps and other pests, and less waste going to landfill.

If you live in a flat above a shop, simply tie your green compostable food waste bag securely and pop it into one of the bins whenever you need to.

Please don’t use ordinary plastic bags or bin liners.

The bins should be emptied weekly, just like food waste bins elsewhere in Thanet. We’re continuing to speak with Thanet District Council to help make sure that happens.

Let’s all do our bit to keep Westgate a wonderful place to live, work and visit.
